In October 2019, stakeholders in Bangladesh’s shrimp export industry stressed the critical need for improved
traceability, certification and processing capacity to stay competitive in global markets. Data from 2019 showed
that Bangladesh’s shrimp export volume was ~35,198 tons and export value ~USD 370 million—a decrease
compared to 2018.
Exporters noted that EU markets in particular were increasingly demanding certified, audited supply-chains and
robust documentation. The local industry responded by accelerating registration of farms, sourcing better seed,
and upgrading processing facilities in Khulna and Satkhira to meet HACCP, ASC and BAP standards.
