The Prime Minister of Bangladesh emphasised in a July speech that the fisheries sector must maintain
international quality standards to succeed in export markets. She noted that fish production had increased by
nearly 58.35% over the past ten years, reaching about 4.277 million metric tons, and called for strengthened
laboratory facilities, certification and compliance mechanisms.
She discussed the establishment of three ISO-accredited labs in Dhaka, Chattogram and Khulna, which will
enable better inspection and monitoring of fish and fish-product exports. The speech coincided with National
Fish Week 2019, and underlined the government’s aim to elevate the country to first position globally in inland
fish production.
