The Government of Bangladesh began 2017 by launching a new national strategy to promote sustainable
aquaculture growth and enhance rural income generation. The Department of Fisheries (DoF) announced the
“Aquaculture Development and Management Program 2017–2022,” focusing on productivity, disease control,
and export competitiveness.
Under this plan, farmers in more than 30 districts—including Khulna, Bagerhat, Barisal, and
Mymensingh—received training on pond preparation, biosecurity management, and improved fish feed use.
The program also introduced the concept of cluster-based farming, where small producers operate collectively
to reduce costs and standardize quality.
Officials emphasized that modernization in aquaculture would not only ensure food security but also provide
employment opportunities for youth and women in rural communities. With these reforms, Bangladesh aimed to
strengthen its position as one of the top aquaculture-producing nations in Asia.
