As 2017 concluded, Bangladesh’s fisheries and aquaculture sector recorded steady growth, contributing 3.57%
to national GDP and 25% to agricultural GDP. The DoF reported continued progress in fish production,
cold-storage expansion, and export logistics improvement.
Shrimp and prawn exports showed moderate recovery in the final quarter, supported by new processing
facilities in Khulna and Chattogram. The government reaffirmed its commitment to sustainable aquaculture
under the “Vision 2021” development plan, emphasizing innovation, certification, and farmer training.
Industry observers described 2017 as a year of transition and modernization—with Bangladesh’s fisheries
moving toward higher efficiency, stricter quality standards, and greater global competitiveness.
