In March 2016, the DoF’s Fisheries Statistical Report (FY 2014-15 baseline) was referenced widely in sector
briefings. Key national metrics included: the fisheries sector contributed approximately 3.69 % of GDP and
around 23.12 % of the agricultural GDP in 2014-15. Employment in the sector (inland capture, aquaculture and
marine) was estimated at around 17.8 million persons (full- and part-time) in the same period.
However, the report also raised concerns about sustainability: shrimp/prawn farm area and production still
formed a relatively modest share (about 6.07% of total production in 2014-15). The Government announced
planned interventions for 2016: improved hatchery seed quality, extension training for small farmers, disease
surveillance in coastal shrimp zones (Khulna, Satkhira, Bagerhat), and stronger export certification regimes.
Key highlights:
Fisheries employment remains a major livelihood source—emphasising the socio-economic importance
of sector resilience.
Shrimp/prawn (brackish water) farms remain a growth frontier but require targeted investment.
The Government signalled support measures in 2016 aimed at boosting sustainable aquaculture,
especially in coastal zones.
National statistical update highlights employment, contribution and challenge zones.
