Government Tightens Quality Control to Meet European Union Export Standards

Following repeated global alerts on food safety, the Government of Bangladesh intensified quality control
measures across shrimp-processing plants and cold-storage facilities. The Export Promotion Bureau (EPB)
and the Department of Fisheries jointly launched an inspection drive targeting HACCP compliance,
sanitation, and temperature control at all approved seafood export units.
More than 40 factories underwent re-certification audits by international agencies, while a new traceability
system was introduced to monitor raw-material sourcing from farms. Exporters were advised to strengthen
documentation, cold-chain integrity, and hygiene training for workers.
Officials stressed that these steps were essential to maintain access to the EU market, which accounts for
nearly 65% of Bangladesh’s total shrimp export earnings.
