Bangladesh Shrimp Exports Remain Steady Amid Global Price Decline. – Copy

In December 2016, the fisheries sector in Bangladesh closed the year on a note of cautious optimism. Export
figures showed slight improvement compared to the previous quarter, mainly driven by rising holiday-season
demand in Europe and the Middle East. The Department of Fisheries and the Ministry of Commerce announced
new initiatives aimed at expanding the country’s share in global seafood exports by promoting sustainable
aquaculture and strengthening infrastructure investment for cold-chain logistics.
A significant policy focus was placed on supporting shrimp and prawn farmers in Khulna, Satkhira, and
Bagerhat through disease-control programs, seed quality certification, and technical training. Experts noted that
Bangladesh’s ability to maintain quality and sustainability standards would be key to boosting competitiveness
in 2017. Industry stakeholders expressed optimism that with better coordination between farmers, processors,
and exporters, Bangladesh could enhance its position as a reliable supplier of premium tropical seafood.
