In early 2016, the Department of Fisheries (DoF) reaffirmed the rapid expansion of the aquaculture sub-sector
as a core pillar of the fisheries industry. According to the most recent statistical survey, aquaculture (inland
closed waters) already accounted for over 55% of total fish production in 2014-15, marking Bangladesh’s
emergence as a top global aquaculture producer.
The Government underscored the importance of shifting emphasis from capture-fisheries, which face resource
constraints, toward more intensive pond, cage and culture-based systems. This transition is intended to bolster
national food security, expand employment, and respond to growing domestic and international demand.
Key highlights:
Aquaculture growth rates were noted at ~8.2% in recent years.
Capture fisheries productivity and area expansion were showing signs of stagnation, emphasising the
need for improved technology and investment in culture systems.
The Government signalled interest in modernising hatchery operations, feed systems and post-harvest
facilities to sustain the growth trajectory.
