Bangladesh charts aquaculture growth as capture fisheries plateau

In early 2016, the Department of Fisheries (DoF) reaffirmed the rapid expansion of the aquaculture sub-sector
as a core pillar of the fisheries industry. According to the most recent statistical survey, aquaculture (inland
closed waters) already accounted for over 55% of total fish production in 2014-15, marking Bangladesh’s
emergence as a top global aquaculture producer.

The Government underscored the importance of shifting emphasis from capture-fisheries, which face resource
constraints, toward more intensive pond, cage and culture-based systems. This transition is intended to bolster
national food security, expand employment, and respond to growing domestic and international demand.
Key highlights:
 Aquaculture growth rates were noted at ~8.2% in recent years.
 Capture fisheries productivity and area expansion were showing signs of stagnation, emphasising the
need for improved technology and investment in culture systems.
 The Government signalled interest in modernising hatchery operations, feed systems and post-harvest
facilities to sustain the growth trajectory.
