According to recent sector studies, Bangladesh’s fisheries and aquaculture industry grew at an average rate of
about 5% per annum over the past decade, with aquaculture (closed water bodies) now accounting for a
significant share of production.
The statistics show that in FY 2018-19, aquaculture production from ponds and other culture systems made up
56.76% of output, and freshwater pond culture dominated the segment. The study highlighted that the sector has
become a major contributor to food security, rural employment and export potential—but also noted that
processing levels remain relatively low, and improvements are required in value-addition and feed supply
chains.
