Blue Economy Initiative Links Fisheries Development with Marine Conservation

In September 2017, Bangladesh advanced its Blue Economy strategy, focusing on the sustainable use of
marine and coastal resources. The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock launched joint research with the
Bangladesh Oceanographic Research Institute (BORI) to assess marine fish stock, breeding zones, and
biodiversity in the Bay of Bengal.
The study aimed to develop data-driven policies to manage fishing pressure, protect spawning grounds, and
identify new opportunities for offshore aquaculture and mariculture.
Officials highlighted that balanced marine resource use could generate thousands of new jobs while preserving
the ecosystem — aligning economic development with environmental responsibility.
